Trade Up to a Plumbing Career

Plumbers are vital to the health and prosperity of our communities.

Yet plumbing and other trade crafts are on the decline. Plumbers are retiring at a faster rate than they can be replaced because few young people or second-career aspirants see plumbing as a career worth pursuing.

WE NEED TO CHANGE THAT PERCEPTION.

Five Reasons to Seriously Consider a Plumbing Career

1. THE WORK THAT PLUMBERS DO IS VITAL. Over the last few years, hurricanes like Florence, Harvey, and Maria have turned the lives of families upside down. It is the plumbing industry that reconnects these disaster-impacted communities to safe drinking water, a clean shower, and proper sanitation.

2. THE TOP 10% OF PLUMBERS MAKE MORE THAN $110,000 A YEAR. With minimal education debt. The median annual wage for plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters was more than $52,000 in 2017.

3. 11% OF PLUMBERS OWN THEIR OWN BUSINESSES. Be an entrepreneur! Earning potential is limitless for individuals who excel at building teams and deliver an exceptional experience for homeowners and building owners.

4. A TRADITIONAL COLLEGE DEGREE IS NOT THE ONLY ROAD TO SUCCESS. On average, college graduates leave school with $37,000 in student loan debt. Future plumbers will finish their training with ‘job-ready’ skills and minimal or no debt.

5. PLUMBERS HAVE CONSIDERABLE JOB SECURITY. Getting the water to flow is always going to be a necessity and something that can't be outsourced or replaced by automation. The US Labor Department projects 21% job growth for plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters by 2022, a high growth rate compared to other occupations.

Tips to TradeUp

Plumbers can’t protect the health of the nation if there aren’t enough plumbers to do the work.

That’s why the American Standard brand, part of LIXIL, seeks to increase the number of people who enter the plumbing profession by convincing them to trade up to a career in plumbing. Our TradeUP initiative fosters partnerships with allies like our customers and sales representatives to identify and eliminate barriers to entry.

In this tip sheet, we want to share our best practices for working with your local vocational and technical schools to help them deliver on their mission to attract and train the next generation of plumbers.

A CAREER IN PLUMBING IS NOT JUST PLAN B.

IT IS A VIABLE, LUCRATIVE AND ATTRACTIVE PLAN A.

For more information on the benefits of a plumbing career or to find out more about training opportunities in your area, check with your local vocational school. Or better yet. Call a plumber! Many firms looking for talent will provide training and jobs.
